In reply to Peter Durnell, yes Peter it can be frustrating and open to shall we say " Gamesmanship ".
I umpired the first Santa Pola open and at the end of the
last game I approached the bell a full minute before it was
due to be rung.
On one rink the lead had the mat in hand ready to place and
the skip then had her walking up and
down unable to decide where to place the mat whilst keeping
a close watch on his stop watch.
Finally I rang the bell before the mat was placed and
the "stop watchers" won that game by
2 shots.
