Pairs
The Pairs discipline saw Mike
Glithero and Denis Tolfree get off to a flying
start, beating Doreen and Geoff Land in only 14 Ends
and going on to beat Malcolm Greenwood and Wendy
Pemberton, before being well beaten by Kate Morris
and Mary Hilton on the Thursday afternoon.
The Home team of Pam and Ron Cole
again got off to convincing start against Pat Fisher
and Mary Detheridge, although they gave a 5 away on
the fourth end, they got this back on the seventh
and went on to win comfortably.
The Mijas pairs next game was on
Thursday morning against Kate and Mary, who were
playing very well, The home team got off to a good
start scoring 4 in the first two ends but could only
muster another four points all game, on paper this
looked a very one sided game but apart from three
ends the winners only scored ONE’s an end.
Meanwhile, the steady Superbowl pair
of Mike Detheridge and Alan Turner were progressing
through the rounds having beaten Jenny and Garry
Aldridge from Los Amigos and Craig Lewis and Terry
Barrett from Superbowl until they met Kate and Mary
in a very well fought Semi Final, coming back from
11/17 down at the twelfth end Kate & Mary scored
2x4’s, a 3 and a 2 to win 24/22.
In the other half of the draw the
team to watch was the Superbowl pair of Andy Salmon
and their young protégé Jordan Ali, who started by
convincingly beating their Superbowl opponents Brian
Judge and Irene Bhreatnach and then after a well
fought game beating Barry Pemberton and Dennis King
from Benavista before they came up againstthe Mijas
Pair of Kevin Bloe and Eileen White, who were having
a very good run. The Mijas pair were always chasing
the game and eventually succumbed to the more
consistent play of Andy and Jordan to set up the
battle of the sexes in a Final between two teams
that had been playing well all week.
The Final was as a very low scoring
game with both teams drawing well, there was only a
one shot difference at the 14th. End, but
then Andy & Jordan scored a 3 and a 5, which was too
much for Kate and Mary to pull back, so Jordan had
won his first title in what will be a very
successful Bowling future if he continues to play as
consistently.
Ladies Singles
The Ladies Singles again saw Kate
Morris do very well in the early Rounds beating her
Pairs partner and Irene Bhreatnach until she came up
against Dorrien Ives from Los Amigos in the Semi
Finals, they had a very good even game until the
eighteenth end when Dorrien pulled off a 3 and 2x2’s
to go on to win 21/14.
In the other half of the draw
Geraldine Robinson from Mijas was working her way
through the rounds beating Pam Cole, who started
well but then failed to score for six ends, Dorothy
Pilmoor from Los Amigos in a game of two halves
where Dorothy only scored two singles in the second
half having been level at nine ends. The Semi Final
brought Geraldine against Mary Detheridge in a very
even game with neither player more than 2 shots
ahead at any time until Geraldine scored a 3 and 2
on the last two ends to meet Dorrien in the Final.
In the early stages of the Final,
Dorrien struggled and having won the first end could
not muster another shot until the seventh end and
then only scored one more until the fourteenth,
meanwhile Geraldine was drawing very well and by the
fifteenth end only needed the one shot to win, but
again as so often happens it took another three ends
before she could claim victory in a game where the
scorecard did not show the quality of play.
Men’s Singles
The Men’s Singles Semi Finals which
saw Jimmy Taylor from Mijas, who had beaten James
Monteith from Los Amigos, Robert Wright from Mijas
and Barry Pemberton from Benavista to meet Malcolm
Greenwood from Benavista, who had earlier beaten
Craig Lewis and Terry Barret from Superbowl as well
as Geoff Edginton from Los Amigos.
This brought up a very even Semi
Final, in which both players started well scoring
evenly, by the fifteenth end they each had 13 shots
on the board, Malcolm went on to only need ONE shot
after the twentieth end, but as we all know the last
one is the hardest to get, Jimmy pulled back to 19
but on the twenty third end Malcolm got the required
shot to go into the Final against Murray Johns.
In the other half of the draw Murray
Johns had played consistently well all week in
beating Don Smith from Mijas, Ken McBride from
Benavista in a very close game, until the fourteenth
end, after which Ken only scored one shot.
In the Semi Final Andy Salmon, who
had already been in the Winning teams of the Pairs
and Fours, gave Murray a real battle with both
players drawing well, by the nineteenth end their
was still only ONE shot between them but although
both players won three of the last six ends Murray
scored a 3, 2 and a single to win21/19 and go into
the Final against Malcolm.
In comparison to the Semi Finals the
Final as often happens did not produce the same
consistency as many of the games in the earlier
rounds, Malcolm like Dorrien in the Ladies Final
struggled all the way and as the score showed could
not find the green. Murray on the other hand kept up
his drawing consistency and came out a very worthy
winner.
Brian Attwood, who organised the
competition on behalf of Federación Andaluza de
Bolos thanked all the people who had helped him and
the players for some excellent bowling, before
handing over to the Federation President Derek
Hilton. The latter expressed his delight at the
quality of the bowling during this prestigious
tournament and hoped that next year all the
provinces involved in Lawn Bowling in Andalucia
would take part. The Sponsors, Colours Hair and
Nails of Benalmadena, then proceeded to present the
Prizes aided by Mijas Bowls Club Captain Pam
Attwood.
