The Mixed Trips final was a much closer affair the Finca Guila trio of Helen and Derek Briggs plus Paul Mayne having had two late night battles against Quesada and Horadada to reach the final looked to be heading to a win at 16 – 13 up going into the last end only to drop a 5 and hand the winners trophy to Margaret and Ian Rogers and Colin Lindgren of Emerald Isle. The Mixed Pairs final saw Ann McKenna and Geoff Hutchinson of Albir take on June and Keith Jones of Emerald Isle. Ann and Geoff had a nail biting Semi Final against Florence and Mike Edwards of Greenlands going into the last end 1 down but picking up 3 to win 22 – 20, while June and Keith who had agreed that in order to see the programme through they would play 3 games a day on the last two days, had to play their Semi Final in the morning against Bonalba’s Chako Hollins and Douglas Brown which despite some good bowling from the Bonalba pair June and Keith won. The final started off badly for the Albir team who found themselves 17 – 0 down after 5 ends and despite a great fight back they eventually went down 22 – 12.
The Ladies singles was in
many ways the most intriguing battle of all, the Semi Finals saw June
Jones up against Val Sherry and Peta Rhodes versus Jan Westall. Both
games were real cliff hangers a couple of times Val seemed to be getting
away but each time June pegged her back and finally led 20 – 19 only to
drop a 2 and the game on the 23rd end, while in the other semi Jan held
a 14 – 8 lead which came back to 14 all and then a 20 – 16 lead which
shrunk to 20 – 19 but took the final shot she needed on the 21st end. The Mens singles was Keith Jones against Alan Phillips of Javea Green they both had comfortable wins in their Semi’s Keith against Stuart Denholm of San Miguel and Alan against Arthur Brown of Horadada. Despite Alan’s best efforts he was unable to match Keith who bowled at his best throughout the week and ran out a 21 – 13 winner. The Monte Mar club did a great job of organising Umpires and Markers and despite a worrying very wet Tuesday morning the competition ran on schedule and Jean Cooper the CBBA President was able to complete the presentation of trophies as scheduled. This year’s Championship of Champions was held at Monte Mar from the 12th to the 16th of April and with nearly 90 entries over 5 disciplines provided a feast of first class bowling. Right from the 1st round of the mixed rinks we saw some mouth watering clashes, eventual winners Quesada took on Albir and then disposed of La Marina and Horadada to face San Miguel in the final. Despite some good wins in the earlier rounds including an epic battle with home side Monte Mar, San Miguel’s squad of William and Marianne Holtham, Anita Brown and Mike Stacey were unable to produce their best form in the final and lost to the Quesada squad of Joe and Di Riley, Violet Campbell and George Radmore by 23 shots to 7.
