Dare To Win at Miraflores!

The last major event in this season’s calendar the Handicap Singles took place this week in wonderful balmy weather conditions once the weekend’s heavy rain was out of the way.

This event is probably the most contentious of the season, bowlers complain about the handicaps they have been given, the handicaps their opposition has been given and anything else they can think of! This year Dennis Wood one of the most experienced and respected bowlers on the coast took on the unenviable task of working out the handicaps and as the results panned out they proved to be pretty fair.

It is the only mixed sex singles competition played at Miraflores during the year so is always popular with the participants. With an excellent entry and most of the members involved we looked forward to a feast of quality bowling. The early rounds saw some very closely contested matches with only a single shot difference deciding the winners.

The semi-finals saw Stuart Thacker up against Dine Warn, while in the other we had Chris Down playing Malcolm Dare. The matches were watched by a large group of spectators and were of an excellent standard, the match between Chris and Malcolm was extremely close with the scores tied at 11-11 after 15 ends in the end Malcolm won through 21-16. While in the other match after an even start Stuart won 6 ends on the trot to take a 12-5 lead, then Dine turned the tables and won 10  of the next 11 ends to lead 20-13 leaving her needing one shot to win. Stuart wasn’t finished though and pulled back to within 2 shots of Dine before she held her nerve to get the final shot and win 21-18. The standard of bowling on show was applauded by all present.

Finals day arrived and again there were again a large group of people watching in brilliant sunshine. Unfortunately, Dine wasn’t able to replicate her form of the previous few days while Malcolm was in his normal relaxed frame of mind. Although the scores were close at 7-6 after 10 ends Malcolm then steadily pulled away to eventually win by a comfortable margin 21-8.

Club President James Tyrer praised all the players for their efforts ensuring both received warm applause from the crowd for their efforts.  He also made a special point of thanking Dennis for his efforts with the handicaps and made special mention of the markers without whom the event could not have taken place.

As the competitive season draws to a close, we have our presentation dinner and various fun events to look forward to as well as a large number of visiting teams from the UK getting a blast of sunshine before the outdoor season starts over there.
