Benavista Coast to Malaga League Cup Victory

An April Fool’s day Final saw a comfortable win by Benavista BC over an under-performing Benalmadena BC.

The League Cup,  is a season long inter-Club Knockout Tournament ,  each Club enters 6 triples and they play simultaneously both home and away (3 triples at each venue) with the result decided by the overall scores of all six triples. The Final is always played at a neutral venue with all 6 triples competing at that venue. This year Lauro Golf Bowls Club were the hosts.

Winners of the Tournament  are awarded The Phil Parnell Trophy which was  inaugurated in 1994. Phil was a member of Mijas Bowls Club and a stalwart member of the bowling community. He was also owner of the Sports Shop in Fuengirola and through his sons Richard and David, The Sports Shop continue to sponsor the competition in memory of their father. This year that sponsorship took the form of individual trophies for the 18 members of the winning team and engraved pens for the runners up.

After 6 ends the Match was fairly evenly set, although even that early the emerging pattern could be seen. Benalmadena were actually leading on 4 of the 6 rinks but 10 shots down on the overall score.

As the match continued Benavista increased their stranglehold on the score and after 12 ends were winning on 3 rinks and tied on a 4th and their shot difference was a very healthy 27 shots.

From that point on Benavista began to erode the deficit on the rinks they were losing and increase the the pressure from their  2 high scoring rinks until it became obvious there was no way back for the Benalmadena team. At 16 ends with a shot difference of -48, Captain Steve Gilkes conceded the match.

At the presentation of the Trophy, Steve applauded Benavista for their victory and commiserated and congratulated his team for reaching the Final.

Benavista Captain Phil Guttridge accepted the Trophy on behalf of the worthy winners, congratulated his team for such a strong performance and commiserated with the Benalmadena team.
