This end of season competition took place last week at Santa Maria bowling club in Elviria with competitors entered from all the nine bowling clubs in the Malaga area. The weather was kind, the bowling spectacular and extremely competitive.

In the mixed fours, Santa Mariasí Tom Rogerís team of Jenny Aldridge, Chic Young and John Warn did not get off to a good start being 5 shots to 14 down but change of tactics changed the game and Tomís team became level on the 17th end. So, with the final end to play for the championship, positioning the bowls was crucial and unfortunately for Gordon Kainís team of Simone Morgan, Pat Fisher and Margaret Kain also from Santa Maria,  luck was not on their side. Gordon touched the jack with his last bowl but it made no impact leaving Jenny, Chic, John and Tom as Mixed Fours Champions 20 shots to 19.

Both triples finals were just as exciting with Benavistaís team of Denis Tolfree, Roy Saunders and John Morgan being level on the 16th end but the Benalmadena team of Juan Abeal, Neil Stanton and Terry Barrett won the last two ends  to take the Triples title 18 shots to 16.  The ladies final between some of the top ladies on the coast was enthralling, with the last end to decide the winners.  Simoneís first bowl secured the shot and Mary Detheridge, Pat Baker and Barbara Land from Don Pablo were unable to take the advantage away so Santa Mariaís team of Simone Morgan, Brig Gunn and Margaret Kain won the title of Ladies Triples Champions.

Simone was also in the Ladies Pairs final with Pat Fisher and took a very substantial lead over Esther Gatter and Nancy Shaw from Miraflores. The Miraflores ladies fought on and started pressurising Pat and Simone but could not quite make it. The final score was 18 shots to 14.

Julian Thomas and Ron Jones from Lauro were brilliant and although Garry Aldridge and Gordon Kain played well they were unable to catch up. 21 shots to 11 was the final score to win the menís Pairs final.

Both Menís Singles semi finals were really exciting but in the final Dave Wilson from Mijas could not find the lines and John Bell from Santa Maria gained victory to take the Menís Singles title. In the ladies, June Baldry from Lauro was 8-17 down but started to pull back to 16 -18 but could not win the last two ends and Barbara Land from Don Pablo,  with her cool approach secured the last two ends and took the Ladies title by 21 shots to 16.

The presentation took place and Ron Jones, Delegado for Federation de Malaga thanked the sponsors, Avalon Funeral services and DeVeres financial Consultants for their support and interest in our fantastic game. Thanks were given to Susan Walker and the team from Santa Maria for the excellent organising of this competition, the numerous spectators for their support and the players who entered.

Anyone interested in playing bowls or trying bowls will be welcomed at any club in the area. Details can be found on www.bowlinginspain.com, or tel. Susan on 664068020.
