New Format a Big Success at Miraflores Open!

The Miraflores Open which started on 10th November reached its climax on Monday 19th November, after a postponement for rain on Sunday, with the finals in the different disciplines being contested. We had been blessed with warm sunny conditions throughout the event, which proved again to be the largest of its kind on the Costa del Sol with around 200 entries in total. We were lucky to have as our sponsor again Ibex Insurance which enabled the finalists to receive ample prizes.

During the week we witnessed many epic battles across both disciplines. As always we had a large crowd of spectators in attendance both during the week and on finalís day.

This year, following soundings from bowlers in the Province, we reduced the disciplines to Mixed Triples and Mixed Pairs which meant that all the matches could be held on the West Green enabling the East Green to remain open and available to our many casual bowlers. Even so fitting it all in was a challenge.

The Mixed Triples event, which had seen at least one match go to an extra end and many others decided on the last end, the final was contested between Mike(in his Miraflores shirt) &  Mary Detheridge and Malcolm Greenwood against  Jeff Turner, Bryan & Brenda Collier. The game saw many twists and turns with the lead changing hands. Mikeís team had a winning spell winning 5 ends in a row  to establish a 10-5 lead after 7 ends. Jeffís team pulled back to within a shot 3 times being 11-12 down after 14 ends. Mike and his team held their nerve winning the last 4 ends to win 17-11 in a compelling match.

In the Mixed Pairs the contestants were Tom Rogers & Susan Walker against Alan Gateshill & Nina McKenzie. This format was played in sets and during the week we had many matches that needed an extra ends playoff to determine the winner. Both teams had been in great form all week. Alan & Nina won the first set 8-6 and then really turned up the heat to win the second set comfortably 15-3 to take the title.

Following the finalís Grant the organiser made a brief speech thanking Ibex Insurance our sponsor and supporter for many years together with players, spectators, umpires, the small group of volunteers (particularly Stuart) and especially Heather & her team for keeping everybody fed and watered throughout the competition which was met with warm applause by the gathered multitude. The permanent trophies, cash prizes and wine were presented to the winners and runnerís up by Shauna from Ibex Insurance.  Feedback from the players was that they really appreciated an efficient and well run competition and looked forward to the same again next year.

A feature of the Miraflores Open has always been the scorecard draw which takes place on the final day with prizes donated from local businesses, this year was no exception as we had prizes valued around Ä600 donated by Ibex Insurance and local businesses: Miraflores Plaza SL, Marbella Golf Club, Los Porches, El Olivo , David of Biddy Mulligans, Streets of London, The Big Fish, Futura Hearing Centre, Miraflores Topshop  and a beauty voucher from Heather who runs the bar, all of which will obviously be put to good use!

With this the week drew to a close and the assembled throng slowly dispersed, hoping to return next year.
