Miraflores Open

Another Successful Miraflores Open!

The Miraflores Open, the largest of its kind on the coast with around 200 entries took place last week in mostly warm & sunny conditions after losing the first day to rain. We were lucky to have Ibex Insurance as sponsors supporting the event. As always we had a large crowd of spectators in attendance throughout.

Following last year’s successful change of format which made the competition manageable on one green and left our other green available for our many casual bowlers we repeated the structure. This resulted in only 2 disciplines of Mixed Triples and Mixed Pairs but with such a large entry a multitude of matches to get through.

The Mixed Triples final was contested between John & Sheila Wilson and Terry Forrester of Mijas against Barry & Angie Holt with Humphrey Hughes of Santa Maria. John’s triple got off to a fantastic start with some superb bowling and were leading 16-3 after 11 ends. With the game looking all over Barry’s team fought back winning 7 of the last 9 ends, but it was a bridge too far and John, Sheila and Terry ran out worthy winners 18-15.

In the Mixed Pairs, played in sets which had seen a large proportion of games requiring play-offs, the finalists were Tony & Esther Gatter of Miraflores playing Lorraine Penning & Juan Abeal of Mijas. Tony and Esther got off to a good start in the first set leading 6-2 after 4 ends but Lorraine and Juan won the last 4 ends to win the set 7-6. The second set unfolded in a similar fashion but this time Tony and Esther hung on to win 9-6. In the tie break the match went to the third end and with Juan holding shot Tony drew onto the jack and Lorraine was unable to dislodge it with her last bowl resulting in a first Miraflores win in this competition for many years.

Grant spoke thanking players, spectators, umpires, helpers and Heather’s team which was greeted with warm applause. Trophies and prizes were presented to the finalists by Elaine (Ibex Insurance).  Widespread feedback from all involved praised the organisers for a well-run competition and vowing to return next year. He forgot to thank Pam for her world renowned bread pudding which she makes for the spectators on finals day but did make amends later!

A feature of the event has always been the free draw which takes place on the final day with prizes donated from local businesses, this year we had prizes valued around €600 donated by Ibex Insurance and local businesses:  Los Porches, El Olivo , Miraflores Golf Club, Miraflores Topshop, The Village Inn, Bridges Bar  and a case of wine from Heather who manages the facility, all of which will obviously be put to good use!
