12/04/2009 - Jimmy Chalmers Retires from Bowling Management.

Article by Don Fisher.

Just after I opened Superbowl at the end of 1984, I met Jimmy Chalmers. He was on the coast to manage and oversee the building of a bowls club in Duquesa, but the people never came forward with the promised finance.  Jim was also looking to come down for his daughter's health as she needed a dry climate, at that time. He entered the first summer championships which were organised in July 1985 and won the mens singles and the mixed pairs with Joan Whitton. It was the start of a very distinguished bowling record here in Spain, which added to his already proven bowling quality which he had in Scotland.

Jimmy at that time was the "man" to beat on the coast and his modesty and easy bowling style was respected by everyone who came into contact with him. He took over the management of Superbowl in October 1986 and ran the club for just about a year. When Mijas was bought and Jimmy was offered that club. He build up the membership and made that a very successful and competitive club where, due largely to his coaching, many good bowlers have developed, some going on to become Spanish Internationals.

Jimmy has been working the last couple of seasons for Santa Maria but has now decided that it is time to listen to the siren call of the bagpipes and return to his native Scotland. He will be missed, but long remembered for his work and demeanour and all of us here wish him, and Jean, all the very best for what we hope will be a long future.

Come back and see us sometime Jimmy,  Good Luck,

Footnote by John Carr.
I owe all the years of pleasure, (and quite a lot of pain!), that I have experienced from bowling in Spain to both Don Fisher and Jimmy Chalmers. Back in the 80’s I ran a small computer business in Marbella which brought me in contact with Don. Pressure from the business drove me to look for a sporting hobby. Don suggested I go along to Superbowl bowls club and talk to a certain Jimmy Chalmers, who was Club Manager at that time. In laid back fashion Jimmy introduced me to the art of delivering a bowl and I was immediately hooked. As Don stated above, Jimmy was “the man to beat” in those days, (not forgetting Don himself and his wife, Pat, who also dominated the bowling scene). The thing that struck me straight away was that he was always ready to take lesser bowlers “under his wing”, including myself. I endorse everything that Don has said about this pillar of bowling on the Costa del Sol and wish him all good luck in the future.
