Markers
Workshop Goes Well at Mijas BC
Despite the onslaught of Costa del Sol summer weather, a sturdy band
of bowlers gathered at Mijas BC, on the 2nd of June to
take part in a Markers Workshop, conducted by John Carr and ably
assisted by fellow umpire, Dorothy Nuttall & John’s brother , Derek,
under the auspices of the Malaga Province Umpires & Markers
Association.
The session started with a mock 2 end singles game in which John
played the roll of a totally incompetent Marker, (some said the role
came naturally!), Derek as an equally ignorant player, with Dorothy
playing the straight part of an inexperienced, gullible bowler. The
participants were asked to note down any irregularities in the
proceedings, John & Derek providing plenty of material, breaking
most of the rules.
Each participant was then asked to verbally identify any suspect
behaviour, followed by discussion from the floor. John Carr then
handed out a comprehensive checklist of the “Dos & Don’ts” of
marking and proceed to explain each point, using some of the
material already discussed. Again bowlers were invited to discuss
each point.
Next, the group was divided into 3 rinks of 4 people, 2 players, a
Marker and an “Invigilator” to take part in a 2 end singles game.
The Invigilator’s role was to make notes on the performance of the
Marker and to discuss afterwards.
Finally, John Carr thanked all the participants for taking part and
reacting so enthusiastically to the Workshop material, with a
special thanks to Derek & Dorothy for their excellent support and
especially to Pam & Brian Attwood for organising the session.
